Real Madrid Crash Out of Copa del Rey
The 2017 / 2018 season continues to lurch from one crisis to another for Real Madrid.
Already trailing the La Liga leaders, Barcelona, by a huge nineteen points, Zinedine Zidane saw his side crash out of the Copa del Rey, losing 2-1 on the night and going out on away goals with the aggregate score being 2-2, to Leganes.
After winning the first-leg, away from home, 1-0, Zidane rotated his squad resting the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, but it was still a strong starting eleven the Frenchman selected.
The writing was on the wall when Real Madrid`s aggregate lead was wiped out when Leganes took the lead, courtesy of a goal from Javier Eraso.
However, any thoughts of a possible shock were diminished when Karim Benzema netted, making it 1-1 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.
But, Leganes obviously hadn`t read the script and when their Brazilian midfielder, Gabriel, scored the team that were in the fourth tier of Spanish football not too long ago had pulled off a cup shock, winning this tie after losing their previous five games, in all competitions, against Real Madrid.
For Real Madrid, the stark realisation is that the only trophy they stand a chance of winning this season is the Champions League and, on current form, that dream could crumble with Real Madrid facing a tough last-sixteen tie against the French side Paris Saint-Germain.
