Real Madrid 0 Barcelona 3
A week after celebrating winning the FIFA Club World Cup Final Real Madrid are in the doldrums after suffering a humiliating home defeat at the hands of Barcelona.
What started with Sergio Ramos parading the trophy in front of 80,000 Real Madrid fans, ended with those same fans watching on in dismay as Barcelona, this early in the season, probably ended Real Madrid`s hopes of retaining their La Liga title.
The first-half belonged to Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo had an early goal disallowed for offside whilst Karim Benzema hit the post with an effort. On another day, Ronaldo might have done better with two other chances he had in the opening forty-five minutes.
Unfortunately, the second-half wasn`t Real Madrid`s.
Nine minutes into the half, Barcelona edged ahead when Luis Suarez scored and the game was effectively ended ten minutes later when following a good attacking move the ball was only kept out of the net by the hand of Dani Carvajal, who was subsequently shown a straight red-card.
From the penalty spot, Lionel Messi made no mistake and Real Madrid now had a mountain to climb.
It was something they never looked like doing and in stoppage time the misery was completed when Vidal netted a third for Barcelona.
Can Real Madrid claw their way back into the title race from fourteen points adrift?
It`ll be a hard task!
