With Barcelona having drawn 2-2 with Celta Viga, earlier in the day, the away fixture against Athletic Bilbao gave Real Madrid the perfect opportunity to close the gap on their Catalan rivals who lead the La Liga table.

Unfortunately, despite their best efforts on the night it wasn`t to be as Athletic Bilbao frustrated Real Madrid and managed to hang on to a point in a goal-less draw.

However, Real Madrid did create chances that could have broken the deadlock with both strikers, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo striking the post with efforts that appeared goal-bound.

Real Madrid`s frustrating night was emphasised by the loss of Sergio Ramos. The club captain, having only recently returned from injury, having suffered a broken nose, saw the red card brandished in his direction after two yellow cards. After being booked for a foul on Raul Garcia, the centre-back caught Aritz Aduriz four minutes before time and was dismissed for the nineteenth time in La Liga football.

However, the result could have been worse with our hosts creating good chances for Inaki Williams and Aritz Aduriz with the Real Madrid keeper, Keylor Navas coming to the sides rescue with a couple of fine saves.

Next up for Real Madrid is a Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday at the Bernabeu.
