Real Review - Deportivo La Coruna 0-3 Real Madrid - 20-8-17
Real Madrid's La Liga season got underway with a win against Deportivo La Coruna at Estadio Riazor on Sunday.
Following a minutes silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the terror attacks in Barcelona, the La Liga defence got underway with a 3-0 win at Deportivo; however, there was a negative from the evening as Sergio Ramos will now serve a suspension, having been sent off.
Gareth Bale opened the scoring when he tapped Real ahead on 20 minutes, coming after Karim Benzema has mistimed his attempted effort.
Effectively the game was won inside half an hour when Casemiro applied the finishing touch to a cross from Marcelo - rounding off a fine passing move.
Any doubts about Real seeing out the win were put to bed when Bale was again involved in the third just past the hour. The Welshman provided an assist for Toni Kroos, unselfishly picking out the midfielder who did the rest.
Keylor Navas ensured he kept a clean sheet when the goalkeeper saved Florin Andone's penalty but Real finished with 10 men when Ramos collected his second yellow card in added time, reacting angrily after Fabian Schar pushed his head into the Los Blancos captain.
Ramos' sending off was his 23rd for Real, his 18th in La Liga, a record he now jointly holds with two other players and would, almost certainly, overtake at some point during this campaign...
When commenting post-match, quoted by realmadrid.com, Ramos admitted a winning start to the league campaign was the most important thing but the defender did feels a bit hard done by with both yellow cards, which he thinks could have been interpreted differently on another occasion but he'll learn from it.
'The good thing is that we've got off to a winning start in LaLiga. There were some controversial incidents and when you don't end the game on the pitch after receiving a harsh booking you learn from each and every incident. We're not going to discuss it any more or speak any more about it. I don't think that they're premeditated decisions, but at times you have to be more careful. Everyone has their own interpretation and all opinions are to be respected. In the Champions League and international fixtures the referees are more tolerant,' said Ramos.
Adding: 'In the first half Carvajal was down for a minute and they failed to put the ball out of play and we warned them then that we would do the same. As a result of that, Modric plays the ball and he gets headbutted on the cheek and I just separated the player, with no intention of attacking him but just to separate him. As for the second booking, I didn't go in to hurt the player either, I jump above him and I lean on his shoulder. We ale to talk freely and when you enjoy a period of such great success, perhaps people have it in for you and not everyone likes that.'
